Johnny Depp got pulses racing in Japan in his latest promotion for new 3D movie Alice in Wonderland.
Depp announced at a news conference that his role as Mad Hatter was one of many more original character roles to come.
“I haven’t so far been in danger of repeating myself, at least I don’t think so. They all feel quite different. I mean, there’s so many possibilities out there. I just love watching people, stealing bits of their behavioral patterns.” Read more »
Visionary director Tim Burton and consummate actor Johnny Depp are almost the Tweedledee and Tweedledum of fantasy filmmaking: Depp brings to life the characters that emerge from Burton’s magically twisted mind. But with this new film, Alice in Wonderland in 3-D — based on the legendary novel by Lewis Carroll — Burton and his favorite cohort Depp fashion not quite an interpretation of the surreal tale so much as they’re booting up a whole new fantasy franchise.
The 46-year-old Depp, of course, is the movie star that won’t get sucked into being a movie star, so he always refashions himself as much as he refashions characters to be an expression of his own convoluted psyche. And Burton is a master of rebooting a franchise — look at what he did to restart the Batman series in the 1990s. Read more »
THE cast and director of the hotly anticipated Alice in Wonderland talk to features editor Rebecca Younger about their childhood memories of the Lewis Carroll classic and why they wanted to be involved in this latest adaptation.
How did you feel when you first read Lewis Carroll when you were children?
Mia Wasikowska: My most vivid memory of Alice as a kid is that my mum put me and my siblings in front of the Czech version of the film, which is this amazing stop-motion version. I remember sort of watching it and feeling incredibly disturbed but really riveted and we were never really able to walk away and leave the video.
Anne Hathaway: I had a wonderful teacher in fifth grade who had us memorise the poem, The Jabberwocky. I had to get up and recite it in front of everyone and that was my first experience with the words. I guess I remember being so excited to shout “One, two! One, two! And through and through the vorpal blade went snicker-snack,” and so much of my character got to work with the vorpal blade sword so I was very excited by that.
Johnny Depp: I can remember reading the book when I was a kid, well, you know, a super-condensed version of that, and then the Disney cartoon took over. But what I remember more than anything is how the story is so episodic, abstract and so all over the place. What I remember, as many people remember, is the characters, how the characters stick with you for some reason. Everybody, even people who haven’t read the book, know all these characters. LONDON — Which is more eccentric, Johnny Depp’s performances or the influences he claims lie behind each one? It’s a close run thing. For his role as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise Depp famously drew on Rolling Stone Keith Richards, but also Parisian cartoon skunk Pepe Le Pew. “I’m absolutely convinced that he’s a great ladies man,” he said of the latter. For his turn as the abysmally self-convinced director Ed Wood, Depp channelled some of Ronald Reagan’s eternal optimism (ouch). For Willy Wonka, he combined Michael Jackson and Anna Wintour (double ouch). And for Edward Scissorhands, he drew on both Buster Keaton and a favourite childhood pet dog. “When he’d done something wrong and you’d reprimanded him, he would cower away,” Depp recalled, “but the second you called him back he would be there, bright and full of love.” Read more »
